A delegation of anti-tobacco activists on Sunday urged the State Minister for Finance to ensure a sustainable fund for ensuring overall tobacco control across the country.
During a meeting with the State Minister at his office in Planning Commission, the delegation members of Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust (WBB Trust) also said the number of non communicable diseases (NCD)-heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes- have increased rapidly due to tobacco uses, unhealthy food habit and lack of physical activities in the South Asian countries. In Bangladesh, about 60 pc deaths occur from NCD.
According to a study of ICDDRB, about 6.4 million people became poor for bearing NCD treatment cost in the country.
Syeda Ananya Rahman, Program Manager of WBB Trust, while talking with the Daily Observer said the country needs to concentrate on preventive measures.
"As tobacco is one of the main causes of NCD, the surcharge money collected from these harmful products can be used for prevention of these deadly diseases," she added.
State Minister MA Mannan said, "Government has positive thoughts to control usages of tobacco in Bangladesh as pictorial warnings have become mandatory on cigarette packs."
The government will also give importance on taxation on tobacco products and implementation of existing tobacco control law, he added.
Realizing the present situation MA Mannan also said, "?at present the government is aware of the need for continuous supply of finance for tobacco control. "
Syed Mahbubul Alam, Technical Advisor of WBB Trust, said tobacco and NCD control has been marked as an important target to achieve the goal of SDG and the 7th Five Year Plan.
Meanwhile the PM also expressed optimism to use the surcharge money in tobacco control.
The delegation requested the state minister to take lead in tobacco and NCD control through 1 per cent health development surcharge collected from tobacco products to strengthen the prevention system. They also recommend imposing higher taxes on tobacco products in the next budget.
Aminul Islam Bokul, ED, AID Foundation, and Helal Ahmed, Acting Coordinator, Bangladesh Anti Tobacco Alliance, were present among others at the meeting.
