To curb the progressive increase in government tax on tobacco products to reduce the use of tobacco products for the sake of public health, death-stick seller tobacco industries are doing different types of illegal activities. That will inhibit the achievements of the government's tobacco control program in Bangladesh. Considering the health protection of the people, Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust organized a human chain program urging to government’s policy makers to keep away from all the confusing efforts oftobacco industry. The program held at in front of national press club on 30 July 2017.
The speakers demanded in the human chain, ‘Tobacco industries are adopting different techniques to prevent the activities of tobacco control law implementation and other policies regarding tobacco control including implementation of Tobacco Control Act, law amendment, increase of tax on tobacco products, providing graphic health warnings on tobacco packages. Recently, tobacco companies are trying to impede the formulation of the surcharge management policy. It is important to protect the policies made for the development of public health by preventing these vicious moves of tobacco industry.
The program was presided Syeda Anonna Rahman, Program Manager of WBB Trust. Helal Ahmed, Secretary General of Prottyasha Anti-Drug Club; Kazi Md. Hasibul Huq, Senior Advocacy Officer of AID Foundation; Farzana Zaman Liza, Research Assistant of Tobacco Control and Research Cell spoke in the program.
