Increase tobacco price and taxes is an effective way for tobacco control around the world. There are directions of increasing prices and taxes of tobacco products in the article 6 of international tobacco control treaty ‘Framework convention on Tobacco control (FCTC)’. Because, government does not have to spend any money for this. Moreover, by increasing the price of tobacco products government's tax revenue will increase as well as the use of tobacco and tobacco-related mortality will be reduced. Which will have a supportive impact to reduce governments health cost in the long run. Seeking attention of the related government authority on the above issue Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance (BATA) nad Work for a Better Bangladesh trust jointly organized a human chain program demanding higher taxes and increase prices of all types of tobacco products on 6 March 2017 in front of National press club.
Speakers said, ‘Increase of any product prices has impact on consumers. It is proved in many countries that increase of actual price of tobacco products has decreased the tobacco consumption. So, necessary steps need to take in our country immediately.
In the program, Helal Ahmed, Secretary General of Prottasha Anti-drug Club; Syeda Anonna Rahman, Program Manager of WBB Trust; Atika Hossain, Executive Director of Nabanita Women Welfare organization; Rokeya Begum, Member of Tamak Birodhi nari Jot (TABINAJ); Towhid ud Doula Reza, Project Officer of AID Foundation; Feroza Begum, Executive Director of Banchte Shekho Nari and representative from other anti-tobacco organizations were present.
