Due to the influence of aggressive campaign, children's are heading towards harmful sugary drinks and unhealthy foods like chips, which is making the next generation sick. Cancer, heart disease, stroke, hypertension rates are increasing as a deadly epidemic as the result of the harmful fast food, junk food and sugary drinks (soft drinks, energy drinks and beverages) consumption. Prevalence of cardiovascular disease and cancer is seen also among the children. False and misleading advertisement should be banned to bring away young generation as well as children from unhealthy foods.
On 24 October 2016, prominent public health specialists expressed the above opinion in a meeting held at VIP lounge of National Press Club. The program organized by Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust on the event of a research book publish titled “Advertising of unhealthy food and its adverse effects on public health” that is presided by Saifuddin Ahmed, Executive Director of WBB Trust.
In the program, there present Dr. Shuvagata Chowdhury, Director of Laboratory Services, BIRDEM; Dr. M Mostafa Zaman, Advisor of Research and publication, WHO; Professor Khurshida Khanam, head of the department of Health Promotion and Health Education, Bangladesh University of Health Sciences; Professor Abu Syeed, Ibrahim Medical Collage; Wahida Banu, Executive Director of Aparajoy Bangladesh; Shafiqul Islam, Technical Advisor of Vital Strategies Bangladesh; Debra Efroymson, Regional Director of HealthBridge; Advocate Syed Mahbubul Alam, Technical Advisor of The Union and gave speech.
Speakers said, as a result of the aggressive campaign of harmful unhealthy food the Bengali culture of eating is going to be abolished. Everyone should know how these unhealthy food and soft drinks harms the people. Advertisements influence the children badly. These ads create fake idea among the children that they can do impossible. These false and misleading information have no stand. These deceptive promotions have to be banned. They also said, there has to be a government policy to stop these fake and misleading ads. Moreover, prices of unhealthy food need to be increase. At that same time, surcharge has to be imposed on these unhealthy foods. By this more currency will be add in the govt. fund which can be contribute in prevention of diseases. Nevertheless, parents should be aware of the harmful effect of these kind of unhealthy food.
