Seminar Titled "Tobacco: It kills" held at Jangannath University

Tobacco control is very important to protect the young generation from the dangers of tobacco. With that, Health Promotion Foundation need to be developed as well as tobacco control for protection of public health. Now time has come to focus on disease prevention, not to cure diseases. Experts and anti tobacco activists expressed their views in a seminar held at Jagannath University on 26 May 2016. The program titled "Tobacco Causes Death" was jointly organized by Prottyasha Anti Drug Club, Tobacco Control Research Cell of Dhaka International University, Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust and Department of English of Jagannath University at JNU auditorium.

In the seminar, Formar Vice Chancellor of BSMMU Prof. Dr. Pran Gopal Dutta was the keynote speaker. Among others DIU Vice Chairman of Board of Trustee Barrister Shamim Haider Patowari, Arts faculty Dean of Jagannath University Prof. Mohammad Selim, General Secretary of Prottyasha Anti Drug Club Helal Ahmed, Program Manager of WBB Trust Syeda Anonna Rahman, Treasurer Prof. Mohammad Selim Bhuiyan and Chairman of Department of English Dr. Md. Abu Jafor of Jagannath University gave speech.  Prof. Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Vice Chancellor of Jagannath University presided over the seminar.

Speaker said, tobacco companies are making unparalleled damage of people only for their profit purpose without being thinking about the the value of human life. So only a few organizations fight cannot stop them, the new generations have to play equal role in this regard. They expressed their consent in increasing the tobacco tax from 1% to 2% in the upcoming budget. As a result a huge amount of money will be gained with which a Health Promotion Foundation can be formed. Through which it will be possible to increase the widespread anti-tobacco awareness. People from remote to urban areas should bring together in anti-tobacco movements.

Deans, Department Chairman, teachers, students of different faculties of JNU was also present in the seminar.
