Tobacco companies are engaged in efforts to prevent ongoing tobacco control activities. It is necessary to take initiatives for implementing article 5.3 to protect tobacco control policies. In the international treaty FCTC, guidelines have been provided for preventing tobacco control activity from tobacco company interference. As a ratifying country of FCTC, Bangladesh has responsibility to comply with the article 5.3. In a meeting titled by 'Necessity of protecting tobacco conies interference in policy level' held at WBB Trust meeting room with media personnel on 7 April 2016, speaker gave the above opinion.
In the meeting, speeches given by Syed Mahbubl Alam, Technical Advisor, The Union; Gaous Pearee, Director (Admin), WBB Trust; Rafiqul Islam Azad, Former-Vice president, Dhaka Reporters Unity; Dr. Habibullah Talukdar, Associate Professor, National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital; Nazmul Haider, Program Manager, YPSA. Nikhil Bhadra, Executive Director, Protect Journalist presided over the meeting and Syeda Anonna Rahman, Program Manager, WBB Trust moderated the meeting.
Speakers said, tobacco company tried to influence in the public health development policy formulation to fulfill their profit earning interest. In some cases it it found that they are conducting some events jointly with different govt. institutions. A code of conduct has to be formulated motioning the provisions of article 5.3. Private sectors and media can play a vital role in creating awareness on this issue. There is no alternative of controlling the influence of tobacco companies to protect environment, economy and public health.
