The recognition of women’s contribution to the national economy through household work will increase women’s social status and reduce violence against women. 29 August 2015 morning at 11.00AM in front of Institute of Fine-Arts speakers claim at an US program organized by WBB Trust. The program was chaired by Gaous Pearee, Director of the WBB Trust and moderated by Ziaur Rahman, Senior Project Officer.
Gaous Pearee said, in society and state women are discriminated in various ways. Women are being deprived of their rights due to discrimination. Nevertheless women play a vital role in development of the state and civilization. But the contribution of women is not assessed properly. They are responsible for important work like child care, patient services and all household chores. As domestic labor works are considered as invisible work, these are not being assessed. But these household workings playing an important role in the economic development of the country.
Naznin Kabir, Deputy Program Manager of WBB Trust said, WBB Trust study, 81% of women are directly engaged in household chores, while men only 1.3%. Where 19% of women and 98.7% of men are involved in any regular or irregular job. Cooking, dish scrubbing and child caring wages cannot be calculated accurately. Beside this, woman’s love and responsibility to their family cannot be calculated by money. If monetary value of women work is calculated it will be seen that the value is higher than the GDP.
Beside these speakers said, to involve woman’s house hold works in national economy we need to make people aware of the importance of women's contribution to household work. To recognize the contributions of women to the national economy. We need swift action to add woman’s contribution through house hold works in national economy and also need a standard calculation to add this contribution to the GDP. We need implementation of national women development policy 2011. All kinds of women's contribution to the national economy and the figures should be referred to the document. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics will make the formal and informal women's labor survey. They hoped that these recommendations, if implemented, will reduce the overall rate of discrimination against women.
