"A picture is stronger than thousand words"- is a proven truth. Pictorial health warning is necessary to create awareness about the multidimensional harmful effects of tobacco products such as cigarette, chewing tobacco etc. Speakers expressed this opinion in view exchange meeting organized jointly by Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust and a French international organization The Union on 1st July 2015. Notable public health specialist and physician Prof. Dr. Rashid-E-Mahbub, prominent environmentalist and chairman of Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) Abu Naser Khan, the Executive Director of Aparajeyo Bangla Wahida Banu, Technical Advisor of international organization The Union Advocate Syed Mahbubul Alam discussed in the meeting titled "Citizens role on implementation of the provision of putting pictorial warning in the packet of tobacco products". WBB Trust's Director Gaus Pearee Mukti has presided the meeting where paper presented by Aminul Islam Sujon, Executive Editor, Swamoshwar-the quarterly newsletter of Bangladesh Anti Tobacco Alliance. The meeting was conducted by Sharmin Akter Rini, Assistant Project Officer, WBB Trust.
Prof. Dr. Rashid-E-Mahbub said smoking and tobacco creates different non communicable disease including cancer, stroke etc. Huge expenses have to bear to be cured from such diseases. So, highest effort should be given to reduce the use of tobacco. And to do so putting pictorial warning in the packet of tobacco products is necessary. But we should keep in mind that tobacco companies are applying different strategies to disrupt the anti tobacco activities. To defend such activities Bangladesh Anti Tobacco Alliance have to strong their social movement.
Abu Naser Khan said smoking is the reason of multidimensional damage. Tobacco production and use is not only a threat for public health but also for environment and economy. To control tobacco cultivation govt. has to provide technical and financial support for cereals farming and confirmation of the market and the marketing systems have to be given for that product. In that way we will be able to reduce the tobacco cultivation.
Wahida Banu said through smoking children's steps towards the addiction-so it has to be taken care of that children cannot start smoking. Execution of tobacco control act has to be ensured. Selling tobacco to under-18 aged people in prohibited in the law. At the same time it is also prohibited to sell tobacco products by them. Aparajeyo Bangladesh works for the development of street children. These children's are far from all kinds of addiction.
Advocate Syed Mahbubul Alam mentioned about the different cunning strategies of tobacco companies for delaying and restricting the formation of act. Active support from the society is needed to stand up against the company. Gaus Pearee Mukti informed that according to putting pictorial warning in the packet of tobacco products is mandatory and it will came into force on March next.
In his paper Aminul Islam Sujon mentioned Bangladesh is still in backward position in respect of FCTC signature and implementing pictorial warning in the packet of tobacco products. Till now about 70 countries have executed the pictorial warning provision and more are going towards that. These have reduced the use of tobacco in the developed countries.
Moreover representatives from different anti tobacco organizations took part in the meeting.
