Despite of being the first signatory country of Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), Bangladesh is far behind to provide graphic health warning in tobacco products. Which dent the reputation of Bangladesh in the international arena. Basically to making addicted youth in tobacco, multinational tobacco companies are conspired for avoiding graphic health warning. Anti-tobacco organizations support the Health Minister Mohammad Nasim's firm's steps to prevent fraudulent activities and conspiracy of tobacco companies.
At a press conference at the National Press Club on 6th January 2016, representatives of anti-tobacco organizations expressed their consent and urged to everyone for defending tobacco companies' conspiracy to stop implementation of graphic health warning. The press conference was jointly organized by Bangladesh Anti Tobacco Alliance (BATA), National Anti Tuberculosis Association of Bangladesh (NATAB) and Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust that is chaired by Mozaffar Hossain Poltu, prominent politician and senior vice-president of NATAB.
Speeches was give by Saifuddin Ahmed, coordinator of BATA; Ad. Syed Mahbubul Alam, the Technical Adviser of The Union. Helal Ahmed, Secretary General of the Prottyasha Anti-Drug's Organization; Rafiqul Islam Milon, Advisor of Manobik and Ibnul Syed Rana, Chairman of Nirapod Development Foundation. The program was moderated by Aminul Islam Sujon, Executive Editor of Swamaswar, anti tobacco newsletter of the BATA and Aminul Islam Bakul, Executive Director of AID; Kahyeruddin Ahmed Mukul, acting General Secretary of NATAB and Ad. Mahbub Alam, President, Badsha were also present there.
Mozaffar Hossain Poltu said, tobacco control is the global commitment of Bangladesh as well as also the government's political commitment. Honorable Prime minister has been strict on tobacco control to protect people from tobacco related death. After taking the responsibility, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim has passed the rules under tobacco control law. To ensure smooth operation of ongoing activities on tobacco control by the government, we should protect and stop all un-ethical, illegal activities and conspiracy by the death-stick seller tobacco industries. We are always with government, Health Minister and ministry on this issue.
He also said, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim has given a breakthrough announcement to allow non-smokers in the medical admission. We welcome this positive initiative of Minister. As well as we appealed to Minister for being strict to prevent cunning tobacco companies illegal activities.
Saifuddin Ahmed said, signing after 3 years of FCTC and enacting tobacco control law after 6 years than Bangladesh, neighboring country Nepal move forward to ensure graphic health warning. At present, Nepal implements graphic health warning covering 90% of the tobacco packages. But after 11 years of the enactment of the law, when Bangladesh is going to implement graphic health warnings from March 19 of this year, the cunning tobacco companies are being fraudulent. Everyone should be united to prevent death-stick seller tobacco industries.
Ad. Syed Mahbubul Alam said, government enacted law to control tobacco and tobacco companies unethical activity. This act is for public health promotion, not for giving fraudulent opportunities to tobacco companies. So tobacco companies' unethical activities have to be defended.
Aminul Islam Sujon said, multinational companies those are conspiring to avoid graphic health warning in Bangladesh, they implemented it more than 80 countries in the world including Australia, Canada, Nepal etc.
In the written statement Mohammad Kamaluddin said, the effective way of tobacco control is graphic health warning in the package. Tobacco uses has gradually reducing in different countries including Australia, Canada, Nepal, Uruguay etc. after implementing large graphic health warning. In Bangladesh, anti-tobacco activities have been going on for long time. When government is going to implement graphic health warnings, cunning tobacco companies are being fraudulent.
