Mobile court tears
down signboards in law enforcement drive
Over a year following the passage of the tobacco control law, many
companies continue to violate the law by using store signboards as a
form of advertisement. On 24 April 2006, the government took action
to end these violations, by using a bulldozer in Dhaka City to tear
down offending shop signboards advertising cigarettes. The move by
the government indicates a strong initiative for law enforcement.
The fact that the initiative was brought about due to collaboration
among government, media and NGOs indicates the possibilities of such
collaboration in enforcing other neglected laws as well, and thus
responding positively to persistent claims that new laws are
unnecessary since old ones are never enforced. |
