The
role of Fuel-Free Transport (FFT) in Dhaka |
Two ways to transport goods--by truck
and by rickshaw van/bicycle. The latter clearly has significant
advantages for smaller quantities of goods, being a non-polluting,
safe, quiet and inexpensive way to move significant quantities of
goods within the city.
Despite
the obstacles, people still appreciate the joys of cycling! And how much
more would they enjoy it--and how much more safe would it be--if there were
cycle lanes.

People will find a place to park their bicycles, if
none is provided--in this case, on the 2nd floor of New Market (we
assume there's an easier way to get there than by climbing on the
roof!). |

| Who needs supermarkets, which sell
over-priced foods, most of which are processed anyway and bad for
us? Dhaka has a great system for bringing fresh produce within
easy reach, without the use of trucks or other polluting
vehicles...much appreciated by consumers, these carts also add color
to our streets. |

| The streets in front of schools are packed--and
extremely noisy with all the honking of impatient drivers--at
drop-off and pick-up times. Surely there is a better way to
transport kids to school--like in these non-polluting "school
buses"--or by bicycle, or foot? |

All told, there is no
doubt--fuel-free transport play a vital role in the Dhaka
transport scene--and the bigger role it plays, the better off
will be the city's inhabitants and the city environment!
