Roads for People: RESEARCH

WBB is currently producing several publications on the issue of Transport Policy.  As they become available on the Web, you can find them under the section "Research and Publications".

WBB has collected a large number of books and other documents on the issue of Roads for People, as well as information downloaded from the Web.  WBB is currently studying the documents, and has prepared several Powerpoint presentations on the topics of livable cities, sustainable cities, and better transport systems.

In fall of 2004 and 2005, Roads for People counted the number of cycles on various streets of Dhaka, to serve both as a baseline for our work promoting cycling, and to demonstrate the need for bicycle lanes.  On average, three cycles pass each minute on the streets, but the range is quite wide, with some areas having much more cycle use than others.  One factor all streets have in common is the lack of safe or pleasant conditions in which to cycle--which prevents most people from attempting to cycle, though many realize that cycling is one of the best forms of transport, for health, economics, environment, convenience, and just plain fun.

In 2004, WBB also collected extensive information on the issue of road safety, including reports, information available on the Web, and interviews with bus and truck drivers, traffic police, relatives of victims of road crashes, and others.  The information is used to design our program on road safety.  In 2005, WBB began collecting information on the problems of the rail network, and ways of improving it so as to increase the freight and people traveling by rail rather than by road.
