 PROGRAMS : GENDER

ENVIRONMENT | TOBACCO CONTROL | Roads For People | GENDER

WBB Trust organized a workshop on "Men's role in reducing domestic violence" at Koitta Manikgonj, 1-3 February 2006. During the workshop, 28 people from 13 NGOs engaged in capacity building on research and programming. An action plan was also made to implement the research recommendations.

On 1-2 December 2005, WBB Trust hosted a regional workshop on gender for the program Promoting Male Responsibility Towards Greater Gender Equality.  Participants from Bangladesh, India and Vietnam exchanged their research results and discussed plans to utilize their research in future programming to increase male responsibility in reproductive health and prevention of domestic violence.

Over the two day workshop, participants discovered many factors in common among their countries, including the widespread belief that women's household work is of little or no value, and the belief that men should make all important decisions.

The participants agreed that much can be done to encourage men to take a more positive role in the family, and that positive messages showing what we want from men will be most useful in convincing men to take more responsibility in the family and treat women better.  The participants also agreed that work must be done to emphasize the economic importance of women's unpaid work, be it in the fields or in  the home.

WBB Trust, in partnership with PATH Canada, is currently implementing a three-year CIDA-funded program on gender:  Promoting Male Responsibility Towards Greater Gender Equality.  The program in Bangladesh is focused on working with men to decrease gender.  WBB is currently studying information on gender-based violence and programs to involve men in reducing violence within the family.  WBB is planning a research program to investigate why some men are violent to their wives and others are not, in order to find messages and programs that can reduce the tendency of men to be violent or otherwise mistreat women.

From 15-16 May 2005, WBB Trust organized a workshop for eleven local partners to discuss the importance of involving men in prevention of violence against women, and to design a research program.  Participants also discussed the need to understand the economic and other contributions of women, so as to raise women's status in society.

From 12-13 December 2004, WBB hosted a regional meeting to share information and program plans among the partners of our CIDA-funded program on gender.  Participants attended from Evangelical Social Action Forum (ESAF), Mission for Population Control (MPC), PATH Canada in India, and from PATH Canada in Vietnam.

WBB began collecting and studying information on gender issues in Bangladesh and internationally in 2003.

WBB is an active member of the Girls' Child Advocacy Forum in Bangladesh.

WBB is currently developing a TV drama about gender issues, emphasizing increased responsibility in the household by men, and the important role that women play in society and thus the need to value women more.
