WBB's Activities
on the Environment
WBB believes that economic
development must occur without harming, and when possible through
improving, the environment. Cities are an important target for
environmental work, as they tend to be highly polluted and to produce
massive waste, but soon will be home to half the world's population. Thus WBB's environmental program is focused on urban
environmental issues, including road use (Roads for People), noise
pollution, and disposable plastics.
WBB is an active member of the Bangladesh
Environment Movement (Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon), BAPA. WBB
supports various activities of BAPA and works closely with them on actions
to improve the environment of Bangladesh. The Executive Director of WBB is a
member of the Executive Committee of BAPA.
WBB played a key role in the formation of
the Committee Against Noise Pollution, which has organized various
activities including workshops, rallies, demonstrations, and
recommendations to the government about regulations to limit noise pollution.
WBB plays a lead role in the
Committee Against Polythene Bags, working together to organize rallies and
protests against the use of polythene bags and in favor of the government
decision to ban their use.
WBB staff regularly participate in and present at conferences on the
environment held in Bangladesh. At the 1st National
Conference on Environment and Health, WBB presented about
tobacco's effect on the
environment. WBB attended the 1st and 2nd International
Conferences on the Bangladesh Environment (ICBEN I and II). At ICBEN
II, WBB staff presented about
noise
pollution and the situation of
tobacco farmers in Bangladesh, and WBB had a stall to distribute our
reports and share information on urban environmental problems with
conference participants.
